  19. <p>     Elected in 1986 as Alabama's first Republican Governor since
  20. Reconstruction, Guy Hunt stirred the party's hopes of expanding
  21. the G.O.P. base in Dixie. Those dreams dimmed last week when
  22. Hunt was charged with stealing $200,000 from his inaugural fund
  23. and other crimes. Hunt insisted that the indictment was
  24. "baseless." Since last September, a grand jury has been
  25. investigating the Governor's financial dealings, including
  26. allegations that Hunt, a Baptist preacher, used state planes to
  27. fly to religious engagements. No charges have been filed in that
  28. matter.

  30. <p>     FREEDOM FLIGHT
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     It seems the Cubans have invented a new game--call it
  33. "InFidelity": whoever successfully deserts to the U.S. in the
  34. most audacious manner wins. Only 10 days after a defector flew
  35. a small plane to Cuba and whisked his entire family to freedom,
  36. the pilot and passengers on an internal flight bound for a
  37. popular resort tied up their co-pilot, knocked out a security
  38. guard with chloroform and, 50 minutes later, were gleefully
  39. exchanging high-fives on the tarmac at Miami Airport. All but
  40. five of the 53 people aboard requested asylum.
