-
HUNT DOWN
-

-
Elected in 1986 as Alabama's first Republican Governor since
- Reconstruction, Guy Hunt stirred the party's hopes of expanding
- the G.O.P. base in Dixie. Those dreams dimmed last week when
- Hunt was charged with stealing $200,000 from his inaugural fund
- and other crimes. Hunt insisted that the indictment was
- "baseless." Since last September, a grand jury has been
- investigating the Governor's financial dealings, including
- allegations that Hunt, a Baptist preacher, used state planes to
- fly to religious engagements. No charges have been filed in that
- matter.

-
FREEDOM FLIGHT
-

-
It seems the Cubans have invented a new game--call it
- "InFidelity": whoever successfully deserts to the U.S. in the
- most audacious manner wins. Only 10 days after a defector flew
- a small plane to Cuba and whisked his entire family to freedom,
- the pilot and passengers on an internal flight bound for a
- popular resort tied up their co-pilot, knocked out a security
- guard with chloroform and, 50 minutes later, were gleefully
- exchanging high-fives on the tarmac at Miami Airport. All but
- five of the 53 people aboard requested asylum.
